Progesterone Blood Test

Progesterone

Progesterone is a key reproductive hormone that prepares the uterus for pregnancy and supports early pregnancy. This test helps evaluate ovulation, fertility, and hormonal balance.

Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced primarily by the ovaries after ovulation, with smaller amounts from the adrenal glands. After ovulation, the corpus luteum (remnant of the egg follicle) produces progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for potential pregnancy.

Progesterone levels follow a predictable pattern during the menstrual cycle—low before ovulation, rising sharply after ovulation, then falling if pregnancy doesn't occur (triggering menstruation). During pregnancy, the placenta takes over progesterone production.

This test is commonly used to confirm ovulation, evaluate fertility issues, assess luteal phase adequacy, and monitor early pregnancy or hormone therapy.

When to Get Tested

No fasting required. For ovulation confirmation, test approximately 7 days after expected ovulation (day 21 of a 28-day cycle, or 7 days before expected period). For other purposes, timing depends on clinical indication.

Understanding Your Results

Levels vary by cycle phase: Follicular phase (before ovulation): <1.5 ng/mL, Mid-luteal (7 days post-ovulation): 5-20 ng/mL (confirms ovulation), Pregnancy first trimester: 11-44 ng/mL. A mid-luteal level >3 ng/mL suggests ovulation occurred.
