FSH is a key hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates egg development in women and sperm production in men, making it essential for fertility assessment and menopause diagnosis.
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a crucial role in reproductive function for both sexes. In women, FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles and egg maturation. In men, it stimulates the testes to produce sperm.
FSH levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, with highest levels early in the cycle (days 2-4) before a dominant follicle is selected. As women approach menopause, FSH levels rise significantly because the ovaries produce less estrogen, triggering the pituitary to release more FSH in an attempt to stimulate the ovaries.
Testing FSH helps evaluate fertility, diagnose menopause, assess ovarian reserve, and investigate abnormal menstrual cycles or testicular function in men.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures FSH concentration in mIU/mL. In women, early follicular phase levels are typically 3-10 mIU/mL. Levels above 10-12 mIU/mL may indicate diminished ovarian reserve; above 25-30 mIU/mL suggests perimenopause; above 40 mIU/mL confirms menopause. In men, normal is 1.5-12 mIU/mL.
Who Should Consider This Test
Women assessing fertility or ovarian reserve, women with irregular or absent periods, those investigating menopause status, men with fertility concerns or low sperm count, anyone evaluating pituitary function.

When to Get Tested
No fasting required. For fertility assessment in women, test on days 2-4 of the menstrual cycle for most accurate baseline reading. Postmenopausal women and men can test anytime.
Understanding Your Results
Early follicular phase: 3-10 mIU/mL (normal fertility). 10-15 mIU/mL: may indicate reduced ovarian reserve. 25-40 mIU/mL: perimenopause. Above 40 mIU/mL: menopause. Interpretation depends on age, cycle day, and clinical context.
