Athlete Blood Test Panel (Iron, Ferritin, Testosterone, Cortisol, Vitamin D, hs-CRP, CBC & CMP)
Regular hard training changes what your body needs, and some common problems, like low iron stores, can build up quietly. This athlete blood test brings together the labs most useful for people who train: iron stores and blood count, vitamin D, testosterone, cortisol, an inflammation marker and a metabolic panel. It is a health check, not a performance score.
If you train regularly and feel more tired than your training explains, or simply want a baseline, the most useful sports performance labs are the ones that find common, fixable problems. This panel is built around them.
Iron stores and the blood count. Iron deficiency is common in athletes, especially women and endurance athletes. A 2019 review in the European Journal of Applied Physiology estimated that roughly 15 to 35% of female athlete groups and 5 to 11% of male athlete groups are iron deficient, and noted that exercise can raise hepcidin, the hormone that controls iron absorption. Ferritin shows stored iron, the iron panel shows circulating iron, and the CBC shows whether low iron has progressed to anemia. Stores can be low while hemoglobin is still normal.
Vitamin D. People who train indoors or live where sunlight is limited are at risk of low vitamin D, which is linked to muscle weakness, bone pain and fractures.
Testosterone and cortisol. Free and total testosterone, measured by mass spectrometry, and a morning cortisol give a hormonal snapshot. Both vary through the day, and cortisol also rises with stress and recent exercise, so a single result is a starting point, not a verdict.
hs-CRP and the CMP. High-sensitivity CRP picks up low-grade inflammation, and the comprehensive metabolic panel gives a baseline for kidney and liver function, electrolytes, protein and blood sugar.
These tests look for problems to address with a clinician; they do not measure fitness or predict performance. The panel is $112, $11 less than the eight tests separately.

Included Tests
Complete Blood Count with Differential
Comprehensive blood cell analysis including red cells, white cells, platelets, and white cell differential.
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
Measures 14 substances including glucose, electrolytes, kidney and liver function markers.
Fasting
Ferritin
Measures iron storage protein. Best indicator of total body iron stores.
Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity
Comprehensive iron panel including serum iron, TIBC, and saturation percentage.
Fasting
Testosterone, Free & Total
Comprehensive testosterone panel measuring both free and total testosterone levels.
Cortisol, Total
Measures total cortisol levels to assess adrenal function and stress response.
Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy
Measures vitamin D status. Deficiency is common and linked to bone health, immune function, and mood.
High-Sensitivity CRP
Measures inflammation marker associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Low-grade inflammation indicator.
Fasting Required
One or more tests in this panel require fasting for accurate results:
- Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-12 hours before your blood draw.
- Water is allowed and encouraged - stay hydrated!
- Schedule your lab visit in the morning for convenience.
What This Panel Measures
A complete blood count with differential (hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell indices, white cells, platelets); a comprehensive metabolic panel (glucose, kidney function including creatinine and eGFR, electrolytes, calcium, protein, albumin and liver enzymes); ferritin; serum iron, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation; free and total testosterone (LC/MS/MS with equilibrium dialysis); total cortisol; 25-hydroxy vitamin D; and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein.
Who Should Get This Panel
Adults who train regularly, such as runners, cyclists, triathletes, team-sport players and people who lift, and who want a baseline or are dealing with unexplained fatigue, frequent illness or slow recovery; female and endurance athletes, who are at higher risk of iron deficiency; vegetarian or vegan athletes; athletes who train mostly indoors or live in low-sunlight areas; and anyone whose coach or clinician has suggested checking iron, vitamin D or hormones.

When to Get Tested
At the start of a season or training block to set a baseline, when fatigue or declining training tolerance has no obvious explanation, or a few months after starting iron or vitamin D to see whether levels have changed (ask your clinician about timing). Test on a rest day or after an easy day, and book a morning appointment between 7 and 10 a.m. after a 12-hour fast.
Understanding Your Results
Low ferritin, with or without low iron, saturation or hemoglobin, points to depleted iron stores or iron deficiency anemia; a clinician will look for the reason (diet, menstrual losses or other bleeding) before recommending treatment. A ferritin that looks normal can still hide low iron if inflammation is present, which is why hs-CRP and the iron panel help with interpretation. Low vitamin D is common and correctable. Testosterone and cortisol results are read against age- and sex-specific ranges and the time of your draw; an unusually low or high value is usually repeated before any conclusion, and abnormal cortisol often needs further testing to find the cause. A raised hs-CRP can reflect a recent infection or injury and is typically rechecked when you are well. CMP results outside the reference range are reviewed in context and often repeated. JustLabs results are informational: review them with a clinician before starting supplements, especially iron, since too much can be harmful.
