Order HDL Cholesterol Test ("Good" Cholesterol) from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
HDL is often called "good" cholesterol because it carries cholesterol back to the liver to be cleared. This single test is handy for re-checking or tracking HDL; for a first look at heart risk, a full lipid panel includes it.
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) carries cholesterol from the rest of the body back to the liver, where it is removed. That is why it is nicknamed "good" cholesterol: higher HDL levels are linked with a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, while low HDL is associated with obesity, smoking, stress and diabetes.
HDL is best read as part of a bigger picture. The American Heart Association points out that HDL is not a treatment target and should not be interpreted on its own; clinicians use it alongside LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and family history to estimate your overall risk.
That is why, for a first check, the Standard Lipid Panel on JustLabs is usually the better choice: it already includes HDL together with total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. Buying HDL on its own makes sense when you already know the rest of your profile and want to follow this one number, for example after months of new exercise habits, weight loss or quitting smoking, or when you take a medicine known to lower HDL and your clinician wants it watched.
Ordered alone, HDL needs no fasting. You visit a Quest Patient Service Center for a quick blood draw, and results appear on your private JustLabs dashboard, usually within 1-3 business days.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures the amount of cholesterol carried in HDL particles in your serum, reported in mg/dL. It does not measure LDL, total cholesterol or triglycerides, which are reported in a lipid panel or their own single tests.
Who Should Consider This Test
Adults who already know their lipid profile and want to re-check or track HDL; people making lifestyle changes that tend to raise HDL (regular aerobic exercise, losing waist fat, stopping smoking); and people whose clinician wants HDL followed, for example while taking medicines that can lower it, such as beta blockers, anabolic steroids including testosterone, progestins or benzodiazepines. For first-time or routine screening, choose the full lipid panel.

When to Get Tested
Any time of day. Changes in HDL take time, so re-testing is most useful a few months after a change in exercise, weight, smoking or medication, or on your clinician's schedule. If your order also includes the separate Triglycerides test, book a morning draw after a 9-12 hour fast.

Understanding Your Results
Quest reports HDL in mg/dL with reference ranges of 40 mg/dL or higher for men and 50 mg/dL or higher for women aged 20 and older, and above 45 mg/dL for those under 20. A low HDL is associated with higher cardiovascular risk and is commonly linked to excess weight, smoking, stress, diabetes and some medicines (beta blockers, anabolic steroids, progestins, benzodiazepines). HDL rises with regular exercise and also with oral estrogen therapy and moderate alcohol intake, so a high value is generally reassuring but is not a reason to ignore LDL or other risk factors. Clinicians do not usually prescribe medicine just to raise HDL. Review your result with a clinician, ideally with a full lipid panel. JustLabs results are informational and do not replace medical care.
What to Expect
After placing your order, we send it straight to Quest Diagnostics — there is no consent form to sign and no partner email to wait for. Your requisition is usually ready to download from your dashboard within about an hour, and you can book your blood draw at any Quest Diagnostics location.
The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 1-3 business days and will appear in your secure JustLabs dashboard.
Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.

The HDL test costs $5 at JustLabs — $23 all-in, since the $18 lab & physician order fee is charged once per order, however many tests you add. The price is fixed before your blood draw; no insurance or doctor visit needed.
