Order Total Cholesterol Blood Test from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Total cholesterol adds up the cholesterol carried in your blood by LDL, HDL and other lipoproteins. It is a quick way to re-check or track one number; for a first look at heart risk, the full lipid panel tells you more.
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your blood and every cell of your body; you need some of it to make hormones, vitamin D and substances that help digest food. It travels through the blood inside particles called lipoproteins, mainly LDL ("bad" cholesterol, the main contributor to artery blockages) and HDL ("good" cholesterol, which helps clear LDL away). A total cholesterol test measures the cholesterol carried by all of them combined.
Because it is a sum, total cholesterol is a useful headline number but not a complete picture. A high total can come from high LDL, which raises risk, or partly from high HDL, which does not. The American Heart Association also notes that age, family history, smoking, diabetes and blood pressure all shape your risk, so the number is always read in context.
If you are checking your cholesterol for the first time, or have not had it checked in years, the Standard Lipid Panel on JustLabs is usually the better buy: it already includes total cholesterol along with HDL, LDL and triglycerides. The single test makes sense when you only need to re-check or track this one value, for example a few months after changing your diet, or when a clinician has asked for it.
Ordered on its own, this test needs no fasting. You visit any Quest Patient Service Center for a quick blood draw, and results are posted to your private JustLabs dashboard, usually within 1-3 business days.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures the total concentration of cholesterol in your serum, in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). It counts the cholesterol carried in all lipoprotein particles together, mainly LDL and HDL. It does not break that total down: to see how much is LDL versus HDL, and to measure triglycerides, you need a lipid panel or the individual HDL and triglyceride tests.
Who Should Consider This Test
People who want to re-check a total cholesterol result, track it after diet, exercise or weight changes, or follow a number their clinician is watching. MedlinePlus advises cholesterol testing every 5 years for most adults aged 20 to 65, every 1 to 2 years for men 45 to 65 and women 55 to 65, and yearly after 65, with more frequent testing for people with a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking or excess weight. For a first or routine screening, the full lipid panel is the more informative choice.

When to Get Tested
Any time of day. Repeat testing is most meaningful several weeks to a few months after a change in diet, activity or weight, or on the schedule your clinician recommends. If you are also ordering a separate triglycerides test on the same order, plan a morning draw after a 9-12 hour fast (see preparation).

Understanding Your Results
Quest reports total cholesterol in mg/dL, with a reference range of under 200 mg/dL for adults 20 and older and under 170 mg/dL for those under 20. A result above that range suggests higher cholesterol, most often from high LDL, which can come from genetics (such as familial hypercholesterolemia), a diet high in saturated fat, inactivity, excess weight or smoking; it can also reflect thyroid or liver conditions. Because total cholesterol includes HDL, a moderately high total in someone with a high HDL can mean something different from the same number driven by LDL. Your overall risk depends on more than one number, so review your result with a clinician, ideally alongside a full lipid panel. JustLabs results are informational and do not replace medical care.
