Order Triglycerides Blood Test from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Triglycerides are the body's main storage fat. High levels can add to heart and metabolic risk, and very high levels raise the risk of pancreatitis. This single test requires a 9-12 hour fast; a lipid panel includes it.
Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in the body. They store extra energy from what you eat. Raised triglycerides often cause no symptoms, so a blood test is how they are found.
Higher-than-normal triglycerides may raise the risk of heart disease, stroke and metabolic syndrome, especially together with high LDL or low HDL, and very high levels increase the risk of sudden pancreatitis. Common causes include a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, alcohol, inactivity, excess weight, poorly controlled diabetes, thyroid, kidney or liver disease, inherited conditions and some medicines.
The Standard Lipid Panel on JustLabs already includes triglycerides, together with total cholesterol, HDL and LDL, and is the better choice for a first or routine check. The single test is useful when you want to follow triglycerides specifically: after cutting back on alcohol or sugar, while working on weight or blood sugar, or when a clinician is tracking a high result.
Preparation matters for this test. When triglycerides are ordered on their own, Quest asks for a 9-12 hour fast. Book a morning visit at any Quest Patient Service Center, and results appear on your private JustLabs dashboard, usually within 1-3 business days.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures the concentration of triglycerides in your serum, reported in mg/dL. Triglycerides are the fats your body uses for energy and stores from extra calories. The test does not measure cholesterol; total cholesterol, HDL and LDL are reported in a lipid panel or their own tests.
Who Should Consider This Test
People who want to track triglycerides after lifestyle changes (less alcohol, sugar or refined carbohydrates, more activity, weight loss); people with prediabetes, diabetes, metabolic syndrome or a past high result; people taking medicines that can raise triglycerides, such as diuretics, some breast cancer treatments and some HIV medicines, when their clinician wants the level watched. For a first or routine cholesterol check, the full lipid panel is the better choice.

When to Get Tested
In the morning after a 9-12 hour overnight fast. Re-testing is most informative several weeks to a few months after a change in diet, alcohol, weight or medication, or on the schedule your clinician recommends.
Fasting Required
This test requires fasting for accurate results. Please follow these instructions:
- Do not eat or drink anything except water for 9-12 hours before your blood draw.
- Water is allowed and encouraged - stay hydrated!
- Schedule your lab visit in the morning for convenience.
- Continue taking any prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Understanding Your Results
Quest reports triglycerides in mg/dL, with a reference range of under 150 mg/dL for adults 20 and older (under 90 mg/dL for ages 10-19 and under 75 mg/dL for age 9 and younger). MedlinePlus classifies adult levels of 150-199 mg/dL as borderline high, 200-499 as high and 500 or more as very high. Higher levels may add to the risk of heart disease, stroke and metabolic syndrome, and very high levels raise the risk of pancreatitis. Common causes include a diet high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and fat, alcohol, inactivity, excess weight, poorly controlled diabetes, thyroid, kidney or liver disease, inherited conditions and certain medicines. Low triglycerides are very uncommon. Review your result with a clinician, who will read it with your cholesterol, blood sugar and other risk factors. JustLabs results are informational and do not replace medical care.
