What Does a Ferritin Test Measure?
The ferritin test measures the amount of ferritin, a protein that stores iron, in your blood. It is the most sensitive marker for iron deficiency — ferritin drops before hemoglobin does, meaning it can detect iron depletion months before anemia develops. Ferritin also rises with inflammation, making it both an iron marker and an acute-phase reactant.
How the Test Works
The Ferritin test is performed via a standard blood draw at any Quest Diagnostics location. Your sample is sent to a CLIA-certified lab for analysis. Results are typically available within 1-2 business days in your JustLabs account.
