Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infects nearly everyone in early childhood, usually as roseola, and then stays in the body for life. This test measures both IgG (past exposure) and IgM antibodies, which a clinician can use when a recent infection is in question.
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is extremely common. Most people catch it in the first three years of life, often as roseola: a few days of high fever followed by a rash. Like other herpesviruses, it then stays in the body in a dormant state for life.
This test measures two kinds of antibody against HHV-6. IgG shows that you have been infected at some point. IgM is the antibody type the immune system tends to make earlier in an infection, so a clinician may look at it when a recent infection is being considered.
Be realistic about what the result can tell an adult. Because nearly all adults carry HHV-6 from childhood, a detected IgG is expected and does not mean the virus is causing any current symptom. Antibody results alone cannot prove that HHV-6 is active, and studies of HHV-6 antibodies in chronic fatigue syndrome have been inconclusive. The test is most useful when a clinician is asking a specific question, for example about a recent febrile illness or about HHV-6 in someone with a weakened immune system, where the virus can cause more serious disease.
This is a laboratory-developed test performed by Quest Diagnostics, validated under CLIA, and not cleared by the FDA. Results go to your private JustLabs dashboard.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
The test measures IgG and IgM antibodies to human herpesvirus 6 using an immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and reports each as a titer (a dilution). Quest reports IgG as Antibody detected at a titer of 1:10 or higher, and IgM as Antibody detected at a titer of 1:20 or higher, with an overall interpretation. It does not measure the virus itself.
Who Should Consider This Test
People whose clinician wants HHV-6 antibody results as part of evaluating a specific question, such as a recent unexplained febrile illness, a mononucleosis-like illness with negative EBV testing, or HHV-6 in a person who is immunocompromised (for example after a transplant). It is not a useful general screening test for healthy adults, because almost everyone is IgG-positive from childhood.

When to Get Tested
When a clinician has a specific reason to look at HHV-6, ideally while symptoms are present or soon after. No fasting is needed and the test can be done at any time of day. If you mainly want to know whether you have ever been exposed, the HHV-6 IgG-only test answers that question.

Understanding Your Results
IgG not detected (titer below 1:10) means no antibody evidence of past HHV-6 infection, which is uncommon in adults. IgG detected (1:10 or higher) means you have been infected at some point, which is the expected result for nearly all adults; on its own it says nothing about current illness. IgM not detected (below 1:20) is the usual result. IgM detected (1:20 or higher) can suggest a recent infection, but antibody results alone cannot confirm active HHV-6 disease, and a clinician will interpret it alongside your symptoms and other tests, sometimes with repeat testing. JustLabs results are informational; review them with a clinician.
