Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infects nearly everyone in early childhood and stays in the body for life. This IgG antibody test shows whether you have been infected; in adults it is almost always positive and does not, on its own, point to a current illness.
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is one of the most widespread viruses in people. Most children catch it in their first three years, often as roseola: a few days of high fever followed by a rash. After that first infection the virus stays dormant in the body for life, like other herpesviruses.
This test looks for IgG antibodies against HHV-6. IgG is the long-lasting antibody the immune system keeps after an infection, so a detected IgG means you have been infected at some point in the past.
Here is the honest limitation for adults: because nearly all adults have been infected, a positive result is the expected finding and says very little about your health today. It does not show that HHV-6 is active, and it does not explain fatigue or other ongoing symptoms; studies of HHV-6 antibodies in chronic fatigue syndrome have been inconclusive. A negative result in an adult is uncommon. The test is most useful when a clinician has a specific question about past exposure, for example in someone who is immunocompromised.
If a recent infection is the question, the HHV-6 panel that adds IgM is more relevant. This test is developed and validated by Quest Diagnostics under CLIA and is not FDA-cleared.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
The test measures IgG antibodies to human herpesvirus 6 using an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) method and reports the result as a titer. Quest reports a titer below 1:10 as Antibody not detected and 1:10 or higher as Antibody detected. It does not measure the virus itself and cannot tell when the infection happened.
Who Should Consider This Test
People whose clinician wants to document past HHV-6 exposure, for example when someone is immunocompromised and HHV-6 status is relevant. Some people order it out of curiosity about past infection; that is fine, as long as you expect a positive result as the norm for adults. It is not a test for chronic fatigue, long COVID or any current symptom.

When to Get Tested
Any time; timing matters little because IgG persists for life once it develops. No fasting is needed. If you or your clinician are trying to find out whether an infection is recent, the HHV-6 IgG and IgM panel is the better choice.

Understanding Your Results
Antibody not detected (titer below 1:10) means no evidence of past HHV-6 infection; this is uncommon in adults, and very early after a new infection IgG may not yet have formed. Antibody detected (1:10 or higher) means you have been infected at some point, which is the expected result for nearly all adults. A detected IgG does not show current or active infection, and a higher titer alone should not be read as a sign of illness. JustLabs results are informational; review them with a clinician, particularly if you are immunocompromised or have symptoms.
