Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2 (IgG) Blood Test

Herpes 1 & 2

A type-specific blood test that detects antibodies to both HSV-1 (oral herpes) and HSV-2 (genital herpes), distinguishing between the two types.

The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2 IgG test is a type-specific blood test that detects antibodies to both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Unlike older tests that couldn't distinguish between types, this test clearly identifies which herpes virus(es) you may have been exposed to.

HSV-1 traditionally causes oral herpes (cold sores) but can also cause genital infections. HSV-2 is primarily associated with genital herpes. Approximately 67% of people under 50 have HSV-1, and about 11% have HSV-2 globally.

IgG antibodies typically develop 2-12 weeks after initial infection and remain detectable for life, making this test ideal for determining past exposure rather than acute infection. Many people with herpes have no symptoms or mild symptoms they don't recognize.

What This Test Measures

This test detects IgG antibodies specific to HSV-1 and HSV-2. IgG antibodies indicate past exposure and ongoing infection (herpes remains dormant in the body). The test reports separate results for each virus type.

Who Should Consider This Test

Anyone wanting to know their herpes status, those with a partner who has herpes, people with recurring genital sores or symptoms, those with multiple sexual partners, and anyone seeking a comprehensive STI screening.

When to Get Tested

No fasting required. Wait at least 12 weeks after potential exposure for accurate results, as antibodies take time to develop. Can test earlier but may need to retest if negative.

Understanding Your Results

Results report as positive or negative for each type, with an index value. Index <0.90 is negative, 0.90-1.10 is equivocal (retest needed), >1.10 is positive. Most people with positive results have no or minimal symptoms.

What to Expect

After placing your order, you'll receive an email from Rupa Health (our lab order partner) within 24 business hours to sign a consent form and schedule your blood draw at a Quest Diagnostics location.

The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 2-3 business days and will appear in your secure Justlabs dashboard.

Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
