The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 IgG test specifically detects antibodies to HSV-1, the type of herpes most commonly associated with oral herpes (cold sores). HSV-1 is extremely common - approximately 50-80% of American adults have been infected.
While HSV-1 traditionally causes oral herpes, it can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact. Most people acquire HSV-1 during childhood through non-sexual contact like kisses from family members.
Many people with HSV-1 have no symptoms or only occasional mild symptoms. The virus remains dormant in nerve cells and may reactivate periodically, especially during stress, illness, or sun exposure.

This test detects IgG antibodies specific to HSV-1. IgG antibodies indicate past exposure (at least 2-12 weeks prior) and ongoing latent infection. The presence of antibodies does not indicate when infection occurred.
