Order Trichomoniasis Test (Trichomonas vaginalis RNA, TMA) from JustLabs for $97 ($115 all-in for a single-test order: $97 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Trichomoniasis is one of the most common STIs in the United States, and about 70% of people who have it have no symptoms. This test detects the parasite's genetic material using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), the type of test the CDC prefers.
Trichomoniasis ("trich") is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. CDC estimates it affects about 2.6 million people in the United States. Most people, about 70%, have no symptoms, and an untreated infection can last for months or years and still be passed to partners. It is curable with prescription medicine taken by mouth.
In women, trich can cause itching, burning or soreness of the genitals, discomfort when urinating, and a thin discharge that may be clear, white, yellow or green with a fishy odor. Men may notice itching inside the penis, burning after urinating or ejaculating, or discharge. Trich is linked to a higher chance of getting HIV, and in pregnancy to early delivery and low birth weight.
This test uses transcription-mediated amplification (TMA), a nucleic acid amplification test that detects the parasite's RNA. CDC describes NAATs as highly sensitive and the preferred way to test. Quest accepts vaginal swabs (its preferred specimen for women), endocervical swabs, and first-catch urine from women or men.
Trich is not part of a standard chlamydia and gonorrhea test, so it needs to be ordered separately. Results go to your private JustLabs dashboard, and no insurance claim is filed.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
The test looks for ribosomal RNA from Trichomonas vaginalis using transcription-mediated amplification (TMA), and reports Detected or Not detected. Because it detects the organism's genetic material rather than an immune response, a detected result reflects infection at the site that was sampled. Quest accepts a vaginal swab (preferred), an endocervical swab, or a first-catch urine sample from women or men, each in an Aptima transport tube.
Who Should Consider This Test
Women with vaginal discharge, itching or irritation; anyone with symptoms such as burning when urinating or genital discharge; anyone whose partner has been diagnosed with trich; and people with a new partner or more than one partner who want broader STI testing. CDC recommends routine screening at least yearly for women with HIV, and says annual screening can be considered for women at high risk. Women who were treated for trich are advised to retest about 3 months later. CDC has no specific screening recommendation for men, but men with symptoms or an infected partner can be tested.

When to Get Tested
Whenever you have symptoms, a new partner, or a partner who tests positive. Symptoms, if they appear, can start 5 to 28 days after infection or much later. After treatment, CDC recommends that women retest about 3 months later because reinfection is common; if an RNA test like this one is used to check after treatment, wait at least 3 weeks after finishing treatment, because leftover genetic material from dead organisms can give a positive result.

Understanding Your Results
Not detected (negative) means no Trichomonas vaginalis RNA was found in the sample, which is consistent with no infection; a very low amount of organism, below the test's detection limit, can rarely be missed. Detected (positive) means current trichomoniasis. Trich is curable with prescription medicine taken by mouth. After a positive result, see a clinician for treatment; current partners should be treated too, and you and your partners should avoid sex until treatment is finished and symptoms have gone. Women are advised to retest about 3 months after treatment. Because trich raises the chance of getting HIV, it is a good time to test for other STIs. JustLabs results are informational; review any positive result with a clinician.
