Thyroglobulin antibodies target thyroglobulin protein in the thyroid gland. Elevated levels indicate autoimmune thyroid disease and are also important for thyroid cancer monitoring.
Thyroglobulin (TG) is a protein produced exclusively by the thyroid gland and used to make thyroid hormones. In autoimmune thyroid disease, the immune system produces antibodies against thyroglobulin, contributing to thyroid inflammation and damage.
TG antibodies are found in 60-70% of Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients and some Graves' disease patients. They often occur together with TPO antibodies but can be elevated independently. About 10% of people with Hashimoto's have elevated TG antibodies but normal TPO antibodies.
Additionally, TG antibodies are crucial for thyroid cancer surveillance. After thyroid cancer treatment, doctors monitor thyroglobulin levels as a tumor marker. However, TG antibodies interfere with this measurement, making their presence important to know for accurate cancer monitoring.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures antibodies against thyroglobulin protein in your blood, reported in IU/mL. Results help assess autoimmune thyroid disease and are essential for interpreting thyroglobulin tumor marker results.
Who Should Consider This Test
Those being evaluated for autoimmune thyroid disease, people with Hashimoto's or Graves' disease, thyroid cancer patients (for monitoring interpretation), anyone with positive TPO antibodies (complete picture), and those with family history of thyroid autoimmunity.

When to Get Tested
No fasting required. Often ordered with TPO antibodies for complete autoimmune thyroid assessment. In thyroid cancer patients, tested whenever thyroglobulin is measured.
Understanding Your Results
Negative: Typically <4 IU/mL (varies by lab). Positive results indicate autoimmune thyroid activity. In thyroid cancer monitoring, positive TG antibodies mean thyroglobulin tumor marker results may be unreliable and require different surveillance strategies.
What to Expect
After placing your order, you'll receive an email from Rupa Health (our lab order partner) within 24 business hours to sign a consent form and schedule your blood draw at a Quest Diagnostics location.
The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 2-3 business days and will appear in your secure Justlabs dashboard.
Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
