Platelet Count Blood Test

Platelets

Platelets are small blood cells that help your blood clot. Too few can cause easy bruising and bleeding; too many can come with inflammation, iron deficiency or other conditions. A full CBC with differential already includes the platelet count for just $1 more.

Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are small cells made in the bone marrow that are essential for blood clotting, which is how bleeding stops after an injury. A platelet count measures how many are circulating in your blood.

A low count (thrombocytopenia) can cause unexplained bruising, nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from small cuts, tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae) and heavy periods. It can follow viral infections, come with autoimmune conditions, liver cirrhosis, vitamin B12 deficiency or bone marrow problems, and a mild, usually temporary drop is common in pregnancy. A high count (thrombocytosis) is often a reaction to something else, such as infection, inflammation, anemia, severe blood loss, rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease, and less often linked to certain cancers.

The platelet count is part of every complete blood count. The CBC with Differential on JustLabs costs $6 and reports platelets together with red and white cells, which helps a clinician see whether a platelet change is isolated or part of a bigger pattern, so it is usually the better choice. A single platelet count makes sense when you are re-checking one known value, for example after a mildly low or high result, or when a clinician has asked for platelets to be followed.

No fasting is needed. Visit a Quest Patient Service Center for a quick blood draw, and results are posted to your private JustLabs dashboard, usually within 1-3 business days.

What's Measured

Platelet Count

What This Test Measures

This test counts the number of platelets in a microliter of your whole blood, reported in thousands per microliter. It measures how many platelets you have, not how well they work: platelet function is assessed with different tests.

Who Should Consider This Test

People re-checking a previous low or high platelet count; people whose clinician is following platelets over time; and people with a known condition that affects platelets. If you are noticing unexplained bruising, nosebleeds or tiny red skin spots for the first time, a full CBC is the better starting point, and new or heavy bleeding should be checked by a clinician promptly rather than waiting for a self-ordered test.

When to Get Tested

Any time of day, with no fasting. Infections, including viral illnesses, can change the count, so if you are re-checking a value, ask your clinician about timing.

Understanding Your Results

Quest's reference range for adults and children over 6 months is 140-400 thousand per microliter. A low count (thrombocytopenia) may be linked to viral infections such as mononucleosis or hepatitis, autoimmune disease, cirrhosis, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone marrow damage or blood cancers, and a mild drop is common in pregnancy. A high count (thrombocytosis) may come with infection, inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, severe blood loss and, less often, certain cancers. Quest notes that a difficult draw or refrigeration can trap platelets in the sample, one reason an unexpected result is often repeated. Review your result with a clinician; a very low count, or any count with unusual bleeding, needs prompt medical attention. JustLabs results are informational and do not replace medical care.

What to Expect

After placing your order, we send it straight to Quest Diagnostics — there is no consent form to sign and no partner email to wait for. Your requisition is usually ready to download from your dashboard within about an hour, and you can book your blood draw at any Quest Diagnostics location.

The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 1-3 business days and will appear in your secure JustLabs dashboard.

Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
