Order Hemoglobin Blood Test from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body, and a low level is the classic sign of anemia. A full CBC with differential already includes it for just $1 more; the single test is for tracking this one value.
Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein inside your red blood cells. It picks up oxygen in the lungs and carries it to the rest of the body, so its level is a direct reflection of how well your blood can deliver oxygen. Measuring it is the usual way to check for anemia, a shortage of healthy red blood cells that can cause weakness, dizziness and cold hands and feet.
Low hemoglobin can come from iron deficiency, low vitamin B12, heavy menstrual periods or other blood loss, thalassemia and other inherited conditions, or chronic illness. High hemoglobin is less common and can be linked to lung or heart disease, sleep apnea, a bone marrow condition called polycythemia vera, smoking, dehydration or living at high altitude. This is a different test from hemoglobin A1c, which measures average blood sugar.
Hemoglobin is part of every complete blood count. The CBC with Differential on JustLabs costs $6 and reports hemoglobin together with hematocrit, red cell size, white cells and platelets, which is what a clinician needs to work out why a level is off. For most people it is the better choice. The single hemoglobin test makes sense for following one known value, for example re-checking after starting iron, or when a clinician is tracking hemoglobin during a treatment such as testosterone therapy.
No fasting is needed. You visit a Quest Patient Service Center for a quick blood draw, and results are posted to your private JustLabs dashboard, usually within 1-3 business days.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures the concentration of hemoglobin in your whole blood. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, so the result reflects your blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. It does not show why a level is low or high; that usually needs the rest of the CBC (such as red cell size) and tests like ferritin or vitamin B12.
Who Should Consider This Test
People who want to re-check a previous hemoglobin result, for example while treating iron-deficiency anemia; people whose clinician is monitoring hemoglobin during a treatment, such as testosterone therapy, where guidelines recommend checking hemoglobin and hematocrit before and during treatment; and people with heavy periods or a known blood condition who follow one value over time. If you have symptoms such as fatigue, weakness or dizziness and have not had blood work recently, start with the full CBC with differential instead.

When to Get Tested
Any time of day, with no fasting. When following treatment for anemia, a re-check is typically done a few weeks to months after starting, on your clinician's schedule. Dehydration can affect the result, so drink fluids normally beforehand.

Understanding Your Results
Quest reports hemoglobin with reference ranges printed on your lab report, because normal values differ by age and sex. A low result may point to anemia, for example from iron deficiency, low vitamin B12, blood loss (including heavy menstrual periods), thalassemia, liver disease or other chronic conditions. A high result may be linked to lung or heart disease, sleep apnea, polycythemia vera, smoking or dehydration, and people who live at high altitude naturally run higher. Diet, activity and some medicines can also affect the level. An abnormal result does not always mean you have a condition that needs treatment; clinicians usually look at it alongside the rest of the CBC and tests such as ferritin. Review your result with a clinician. JustLabs results are informational and do not replace medical care.
