Order Mercury Blood Test from JustLabs for $27 ($45 all-in for a single-test order: $27 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Measures the total amount of mercury in your whole blood. Blood mercury mainly reflects methylmercury, the form found in fish, and recent exposure, so it is a practical way to check whether your diet or environment is raising your levels.
Mercury comes in three main forms: elemental (metallic) mercury, such as in old thermometers; inorganic mercury salts, found in some skin-lightening creams and other products; and methylmercury, which builds up in the aquatic food chain. For most people, eating fish and shellfish is the main source of exposure, and large, long-lived predatory fish carry the most.
Whole-blood mercury is used to monitor methylmercury exposure. It also reflects recent exposure to other forms, since mercury in blood falls by about half every few days once exposure stops. Urine is the better specimen for metallic mercury vapor and inorganic mercury, and hair can reflect methylmercury exposure from many months earlier.
Almost everyone has a small amount of mercury in their blood, and CDC data show most people are below levels associated with possible health effects. People who eat a lot of high-mercury fish, people who use imported creams or folk remedies that may contain mercury, and people with possible workplace exposure are the most common reasons to test.
If you want a broader screen, the JustLabs Heavy Metals Panel (Blood) measures lead, mercury and arsenic together.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
Total mercury in whole blood, measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In people whose main exposure is fish, blood mercury mostly reflects methylmercury.
Who Should Consider This Test
People who eat fish often, especially high-mercury species such as swordfish, shark, king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, tilefish or bigeye tuna; people planning a pregnancy who want to check their exposure; people who have used skin creams, imported remedies or products that may contain mercury; people with possible workplace or household exposure; and people with symptoms such as tingling, coordination problems or vision changes whose clinician wants to rule mercury in or out.

When to Get Tested
When you are concerned about exposure from diet, products or your environment. Because blood mercury reflects relatively recent exposure, test while the exposure is ongoing or soon after it. Quest asks you to avoid seafood for 48 hours before the draw so that a single recent meal does not skew the result.

Understanding Your Results
Quest reports blood mercury in mcg/L; Quest's reference range for this test is 10 mcg/L or less. A result within that range is typical. A higher result usually reflects frequent consumption of high-mercury fish or another recent exposure, such as mercury-containing products or occupational sources. A single high value does not mean you have mercury poisoning; a clinician will consider your diet, products you use, symptoms such as tingling, coordination problems or vision changes, and may repeat the test or add a urine mercury test if inorganic or metallic mercury exposure is suspected. Review your results with a clinician, especially if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
