Heavy Metals Panel Blood Test

Heavy Metals

This panel tests for three common toxic heavy metals - lead, mercury, and arsenic - that can accumulate in the body from environmental exposure, contaminated food or water, and occupational hazards.

Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that can be toxic to humans even at low levels. This panel screens for three of the most clinically significant heavy metals:

Lead - Once used widely in paint, gasoline, and plumbing, lead exposure still occurs through old paint in homes, contaminated soil, certain occupations, and imported goods. Lead is particularly dangerous to developing brains in children.

Mercury - Exposure primarily comes from fish consumption (especially large predatory fish like tuna, swordfish, and shark), dental amalgam fillings, and certain occupational settings. Mercury affects the nervous system.

Arsenic - Found in contaminated groundwater (especially private wells), rice products, some seafood, and occupational exposures. Chronic exposure is linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurological effects.

This blood test measures recent exposure. For long-term exposure assessment, hair or urine testing may also be recommended.

What This Test Measures

This panel measures the concentration of lead, mercury, and arsenic in your blood. Lead is reported in µg/dL (normal <5 µg/dL for adults), mercury in µg/L (normal <10 µg/L), and arsenic in µg/L (normal <12 µg/L for blood). Results reflect recent exposure.

Who Should Consider This Test

People with suspected heavy metal exposure, those with unexplained neurological symptoms, workers in high-risk occupations (construction, mining, battery manufacturing), people with contaminated water concerns, high fish consumers, and anyone living in older homes with lead paint.

When to Get Tested

No fasting required. Blood tests reflect recent exposure (weeks to months). For suspected chronic or past exposure, urine or hair testing may be more appropriate. Avoid eating fish for 48 hours before testing if mercury is the primary concern.

Understanding Your Results

Normal blood lead is <5 µg/dL (no safe level for children). Normal blood mercury is <10 µg/L. Normal blood arsenic is <12 µg/L. Any elevation warrants investigation of exposure sources and possible retesting. Significantly elevated levels require medical evaluation and potential chelation therapy.

What to Expect

After placing your order, you'll receive an email from Rupa Health (our lab order partner) within 24 business hours to sign a consent form and schedule your blood draw at a Quest Diagnostics location.

The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 5-7 business days and will appear in your secure Justlabs dashboard.

Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
