What Is a Normal Iron & TIBC Level?
The normal Iron & TIBC range is 60–170 mcg/dL. Values below or above this range may indicate a condition that requires further evaluation.
Reference Range Table
| Marker | Low | Normal | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serum Iron | Below 60 mcg/dL — iron deficiency | 60–170 mcg/dL | Above 170 mcg/dL — iron overload |
| TIBC | Below 250 mcg/dL — chronic disease or overload | 250–370 mcg/dL | Above 370 mcg/dL — body compensating for iron shortage |
| Transferrin Saturation | Below 20% — iron deficiency | 20–50% | Above 50% — iron overload risk |
What Affects Your Results
Time of day (iron levels fluctuate throughout the day), recent meals (especially iron-rich foods), fasting status, inflammation, and iron supplements taken within 24 hours.
When to Retest
If treating iron deficiency, retest in 8-12 weeks along with ferritin. Once levels normalize, every 6-12 months.
