Hepatitis C Antibody Blood Test

Hep C

A screening blood test that detects antibodies to Hepatitis C virus (HCV), indicating past or current infection.

The Hepatitis C Antibody test screens for Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by detecting antibodies your immune system produces in response to the virus. Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can lead to serious liver damage if untreated.

The CDC recommends that all adults get tested for Hepatitis C at least once in their lifetime, with more frequent testing for those with ongoing risk factors. People born between 1945-1965 (baby boomers) have 5x higher rates of Hepatitis C and should definitely be tested.

Hepatitis C is now curable in over 95% of cases with modern antiviral medications. Early detection through screening allows treatment before significant liver damage occurs.

What This Test Measures

This test detects antibodies to Hepatitis C virus. A positive result means you have been exposed to HCV at some point. It does not distinguish between current infection and past cleared infection - a positive result requires confirmatory testing (HCV RNA) to determine if infection is active.

Who Should Consider This Test

All adults at least once (CDC recommendation), people born 1945-1965, current or former injection drug users, recipients of blood transfusions before 1992, people with HIV, healthcare workers with needle exposure, and those with unexplained liver problems.

When to Get Tested

No fasting required. Test can be done anytime. Wait at least 8-12 weeks after potential exposure for accurate results, as antibodies take time to develop.

Understanding Your Results

Results are reported as reactive (positive) or non-reactive (negative). A reactive result means HCV antibodies are present and requires confirmatory HCV RNA testing to determine if infection is active. A non-reactive result means no antibodies detected.
