Order AST Blood Test (Aspartate Aminotransferase, SGOT) from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
AST is an enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles and other tissues, and it rises in the blood when those cells are injured. On its own it is less liver-specific than ALT, so it is most useful read together with ALT, or to re-check an AST that came back high.
AST (aspartate aminotransferase, also called SGOT) is an enzyme found in large amounts in the liver and heart, and in smaller amounts in skeletal muscle, kidneys, pancreas and other tissues. When cells in any of these tissues are damaged, AST leaks into the bloodstream and the level rises.
That wide distribution is why AST is almost always read next to ALT. ALT is concentrated in the liver, so a high AST with a normal ALT points away from the liver (toward muscle, for example after a hard workout), while both rising together suggests the liver is the source. AST and ALT are both part of the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) and the Hepatic Function Panel on JustLabs.
Ordering AST by itself makes sense when you are following this one value: re-checking an AST that was mildly high last time, or tracking it over time as your clinician advised. If you are checking your liver for the first time or have symptoms, a panel gives AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin and proteins from a single draw, which is far more informative.
AST cannot identify a cause on its own. A clinician interprets it with your other results, medicines, alcohol use and recent activity.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in your blood serum. Quest notes that AST is widely distributed, with significant amounts in the heart and liver and smaller amounts in skeletal muscle, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, lungs and brain; injury to these tissues releases AST into the circulation.
Who Should Consider This Test
People re-checking an AST that came back high; people following AST alongside ALT as their clinician advised; and people with a higher risk of liver problems, such as a family history of liver disease, heavy alcohol use, obesity, diabetes, liver-affecting medicines, or hepatitis or exposure to it. If you have symptoms of liver disease, a full liver panel is usually the better starting point.

When to Get Tested
Any time of day; no fasting is needed. Because strenuous exercise and muscle injury can raise AST, test under your normal routine rather than in the day or two after an unusually hard workout, and use the interval your clinician suggests for a re-check.

Understanding Your Results
A result within the lab's reference range is reassuring for this marker; a low AST is usually considered normal. A high AST can reflect liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver injury from alcohol or medicines, but also non-liver causes: recent intense exercise or muscle injury, heart problems or procedures, pancreatitis, mononucleosis, iron overload (hemochromatosis), seizures, burns or surgery. Comparing AST with ALT, and repeating a mildly high value, are the usual next steps; a clinician decides whether more testing is needed. Ranges vary by age and sex. JustLabs results are informational; review them with a clinician.
What to Expect
After placing your order, we send it straight to Quest Diagnostics — there is no consent form to sign and no partner email to wait for. Your requisition is usually ready to download from your dashboard within about an hour, and you can book your blood draw at any Quest Diagnostics location.
The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 1-3 business days and will appear in your secure JustLabs dashboard.
Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
How much does the AST test cost?
The AST test costs $5 at JustLabs — $23 all-in, since the $18 lab & physician order fee is charged once per order, however many tests you add. The price is fixed before your blood draw; no insurance or doctor visit needed.
