Order Blood Type Test (ABO Group and Rh Type) from JustLabs for $14 ($32 all-in for a single-test order: $14 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Learn your blood type: your ABO group (A, B, AB or O) and whether you are Rh-positive or Rh-negative. No fasting or preparation is needed, and the result is for your personal knowledge.
Your blood type is inherited and does not change over your lifetime. It is defined by markers on the surface of your red blood cells: the A and B antigens, which give the four ABO groups (A, B, AB and O), and the Rh protein, which makes you Rh-positive when it is present and Rh-negative when it is absent. Combined, these give the eight common blood types, such as O-positive or A-negative.
Many people simply do not know their blood type. Knowing it is useful before a pregnancy, because an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby needs specific care to protect the baby, and it is handy background information for your own health records.
The lab determines your ABO group in two steps: your red cells are mixed with antibodies against A and B, and your plasma is checked against cells of known type. A similar method gives your Rh type.
For your own information. Hospitals and blood banks always run their own blood typing before a transfusion or donation, and this result can't be used for legal or paternity purposes.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test identifies your ABO blood group (A, B, AB or O) by detecting the A and B antigens on your red blood cells and confirming the matching antibodies in your plasma, and your Rh type (positive or negative) by detecting the Rh (D) protein on your red cells. Quest performs it by immune agglutination: antibodies make red cells clump when the matching antigen is present.
Who Should Consider This Test
Anyone curious about their blood type, people planning a pregnancy who want to know their Rh status in advance, and anyone who wants their blood type on hand for their personal health records. It is not a substitute for the typing and crossmatch a hospital performs before a transfusion.

When to Get Tested
Any time; your blood type is inherited and stays the same throughout life, so one test is normally enough. If you are planning a pregnancy, knowing your Rh type ahead of time can be useful, although your prenatal care team will also test it during pregnancy.

Understanding Your Results
Your report shows your ABO group (A, B, AB or O) and your Rh type (positive or negative), for example "O, Rh positive". There is no normal or abnormal result: every type is a normal variant. Type O red cells can be given to people of any ABO group, which is why type O is called the universal donor, and Rh-negative people should receive only Rh-negative blood. If you are Rh-negative and pregnant or planning a pregnancy, share the result with your obstetric clinician, who decides whether Rh immune globulin is needed. Rare blood types beyond the eight common types are not identified by this test. Review your results with a clinician if you have questions.
