What Is a Normal Sed Rate Level?
The normal Sed Rate range is 0–20 mm/hr (Quest adult range; your report shows the cutoff for your age and sex). Values below or above this range may indicate a condition that requires further evaluation.
Reference Range Table
| Marker | Low | Normal | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESR (Westergren) | A low ESR is rarely a concern on its own | 0–20 mm/hr (Quest adult range; your report shows the cutoff for your age and sex) | Above 20 mm/hr — inflammation is likely somewhere in the body |
What Affects Your Results
Age and sex (ESR rises with age and is a little higher in women), pregnancy, anemia, kidney disease, high cholesterol, obesity and recent infection can raise ESR. Sickle cell disease, polycythemia, very high white cell counts and some medications can lower it.
When to Retest
When ESR is being used to follow an inflammatory condition, it is usually rechecked every few weeks to months as your clinician directs. A single mildly high value is often repeated after a few weeks, once any recent infection has cleared.
