Order Chloride Blood Test from JustLabs for $5 ($23 all-in for a single-test order: $5 + one $18 lab & physician order fee per order). Price includes lab processing at Quest Diagnostics. No insurance required.
Chloride is an electrolyte, found mostly in salt, that helps control fluid balance, blood volume and blood pressure. It is read together with sodium and bicarbonate (CO2) to look at fluid and acid-base balance.
Chloride is the main negatively charged electrolyte in the fluid outside your cells. It balances the positive charge of sodium, helps keep the right amount of water in the body, and plays a part in how the blood carries carbon dioxide as bicarbonate. You get it mostly from salt in food, and your kidneys remove the extra in urine.
Chloride rarely tells a story on its own. It tends to move with sodium when the problem is fluids, and in the opposite direction from bicarbonate when the problem is acid-base balance. That is why clinicians read chloride together with sodium and CO2, for example when someone has had prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or has kidney, lung or heart conditions.
Chloride is also included in our Basic Metabolic Panel, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel and Renal Function Panel, which report it alongside sodium, potassium and CO2; for most people a panel is the more useful way to look at chloride. Choose this single test when you only need to re-check chloride, for example to follow up an earlier result your clinician wants repeated.

What's Measured
What This Test Measures
This test measures chloride in your serum, by ion-selective electrode at Quest. About two thirds of the negatively charged particles in the fluid outside cells are chloride, which counterbalances sodium and helps maintain hydration and osmotic pressure, and its movement into and out of red blood cells is tied to how bicarbonate carries carbon dioxide.
Who Should Consider This Test
People re-checking a chloride that was high or low on a previous panel; people with prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, dehydration, or kidney, heart, lung or liver conditions whose clinician wants electrolytes followed; and people taking medicines that can shift electrolytes.

When to Get Tested
Any time of day; no fasting is needed. If you have recently had a bout of vomiting or diarrhea, your result may reflect that episode; testing once you are back to your usual eating and drinking shows your baseline.

Understanding Your Results
Quest's reference range for this code is 98-110 mmol/L. A high chloride (hyperchloremia) can reflect dehydration, kidney disease or metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the blood). A low chloride (hypochloremia) can reflect prolonged vomiting, heart failure, lung disease, Addison disease or metabolic alkalosis (too much base in the blood). Drinking a lot of fluid, losing fluid, or some medicines can also move chloride, so an abnormal value does not always mean a condition that needs treatment. Clinicians interpret chloride with sodium and CO2, and sometimes calculate the anion gap from them. JustLabs results are informational; review them with a clinician.
What to Expect
After placing your order, we send it straight to Quest Diagnostics — there is no consent form to sign and no partner email to wait for. Your requisition is usually ready to download from your dashboard within about an hour, and you can book your blood draw at any Quest Diagnostics location.
The blood draw typically takes just a few minutes. Results are usually available within 1-3 business days and will appear in your secure JustLabs dashboard.
Our results include reference ranges and easy-to-understand indicators showing whether your values are within normal limits.
How much does the Chloride test cost?
The Chloride test costs $5 at JustLabs — $23 all-in, since the $18 lab & physician order fee is charged once per order, however many tests you add. The price is fixed before your blood draw; no insurance or doctor visit needed.
